The Light Hurts Your Eyes
11 × 15 inches, oil on panel, 2021

Painted on a handmade panel (poplar cradle; baltic birch surface) with acrylic gesso grounds

We install screens as selective barriers: let light and air in, but keep out bugs and any errantly blowing leaves. But we have to admit that we can’t shield ourselves from part of the world without distorting the rest.

If this sounds critical, it isn’t—I don’t want flies in my house, either, and all summer long I pestered my landlord for a screen door (which I did not receive, despite promises).

Look at what gets caught in screens, nets, and webs. Look at how they catch the light. Close your eyes and look at the glowing grid burned into your vision. How long does it stay there? Can you see your own blood?
